This chapter consists of the theories of Peter Newmark about methods of translation: word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation; and the theories of Nida and Taber about procedures of translation, formal and dynamic equivalence analysis. This chapter also discusses subtitle determinations, the subtitling process, and translation strategies in subtitling.Chapter 3: Analysis result And Discussion of Indonesian Translation in English Subtitles Vice Versa of NZ Gamelan of Selamat Pagi Indonesia Metro TV News Programme

The term paper intends to provide answers to the following questions:1.4.1 What are the translation methods applied in translating Indonesian into
1.4.2 What is the equivalence level of translating Indonesian into English in the NZ Gamelan?
5. Variability of research
Independent variable : (1) Newmark’s V Diagram Translation method and(2) Nida’s Equivalence
Dependent variable: Subtitles of New Zealand Gamelan of Selamat Pagi Indonesia
Metro TV News Programme
6. Framework of the Theories
a. Equivalence determinant.
In this term paper, the writer conducts Nida’s Equivalence (1964a:159) in favour of ‘two basic orientations’ or ‘types of equivalence’: (1) formal equivalence and (2) dynamic equivalence. These are defined by Nida as follows:
- Nida and Taber (1969: 22–28) define formal equivalence or ‘formal correspondence’ as thus keenly oriented towards the ST structure, which exerts a strong influence in determining accuracy and correctness.
- Dynamic or functional equivalence is based on what Nida calls ‘the principle of equivalent effect’, where ‘the relationship between receptor and message should be substantially the same as that which existed between the original receptors and the message’ (Nida 1964a: 159).
b. Translation Methods determinant.
In this term paper, the writer conducting Peter Newmark’s Theory through the “V” diagram, Newmark (1988:45-47) describes there are eight methods of translation that are classified into two emphases. The first is the translation methods that are oriented in the Source language: word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, and semantic translation. The other four translation methods are oriented in Target Language: adaptation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation.
c. Subtitle determinant
7. Methods of research
The research was conducted through a qualitative descriptive approach. The writer is based on the data taken from translations provided in NZ Gamelan and then the writer identifies and classifies the source texts (ST) and target texts (TT). However, the writer will only include Nida’s Equivalence types and Newmark’s V diagram translation for research purposes. The translated texts will be analyzed according to chosen equivalence and translation method taxonomy.8. Result of research
- The writer finds 25 data collect from 22 sentences in the subtitle of NZ Gamelan. There are 2 translated as literal translations, 5 faithful translations, 1 idiomatic translation, 2 free translations, 5 semantic translations and 6 translations as communicative translations,
- The writer finds 17 data collect from 14 sentences in the subtitle of Nz Gamelan, there are 8 data classified as formal equivalence and 9 classified as dynamic equivalence.
